In today’s economy, it is the role of the CIO to integrate and rationalize business information to facilitate sound business decisions and create and deploy an agile enterprise information infrastructure that supports business strategy and leverages existing assets. Cross charging can be seen as a viable consideration as the IT department and business leaders take on more of an appreciation of the synergies between each other’s roles.

So to answer your question ‘how will Green IT and virtualisation change the landscape? The answer is simple. Green IT and virtualisation are natural evolutions. Perhaps it’s more a case of ‘enhance’ rather than ‘change’; either way, it’s an evolution that must be taken charge of and cannot be ignored.

Re: Sorry that’s in the extra bundle – but is that extra indirectly core to your product/your value proposition?

Greedy vendors gota love em....you'd think in the credit crunch we'd be getting BOGOF deals....A lot of avoiding what you say is reliant on vendor negoiation and technical design tactic however unfortunately the lack of openess means yes we get locked in and those poxy vendors have the upper hand on every renewal...

Not sure why you say this has not increased OSS popularity, I see a larger trend in OSS popularity in the last 2-3 years mainly due to companies being sick of paying the likes of Microsoft and Oracle ludicrous volumes of cash for licenses that only ever 25% of the features get used. Add to this the rediculous issues with licensing proprietory software on VMware and you have even more reason to move to open source.

Re: Talking about cloud

The referenced article says that the time is right for HPC vendors to muscle in on providing cloud solutions, but grid applications are those in which the applications are optimized for segregation into many calculation packets, probably in a scale-out environment. Where this occurs in a wide-area network (think the SETI screensavers), there are similarities to that of establishing a cloud infrastructure. The core of this and the most important word we should be focusing on is the infrastructure. The infrastructure needs to be in place, secure, robust, and dynamic - probably with a dash of virtualization. At IBM, we offer solutions and advanced technology that provide the DNA needed to deploy a dynamic infrastructure that helps a company to thrive. Dynamic Infrastructure is a part of the journey towards cloud computing.

What of the comparison between grid and cloud computing? Well, grid is not cloud and cloud is not grid. They may both be buzzwords, but they are different buzzwords. Can grid computing be transferred into a cloud? Different question, but probably, yes.

Perhaps the question CIOs should ask themselves is "is my infrastructure ready for cloud computing, if that is what helps the business?".

Re: GridWiseTech publishes document on improving database performance

Having read the article, I was surprised at how many of the problems I could identify with.

It provides an excellent summary of the methods that can be taken to solve the database problems that we are currently facing. However, for a small business, virtualising a blade server-based SAN infrastructure can be seen as prohibitive from a cost perspective, so that’s why we at IBM have combined servers, switches, a management component and importantly, an entire storage area network into a single flexible and low-cost solution (BladeCenter S) for small businesses which allows you to ‘virtualise everything’ while helping to lower running and management costs

Re: How will green IT and virtualization change the landscape?

While many of us constantly strive to be as green as possible, as business managers we have a responsibility to our businesses to maximize the profitability of our organizations. These may appear to be in conflict, but there are reasonable and appropriate improvements we can implement today. From choosing servers with high efficiency power supplies to retiring hardware in favor of utilizing virtual servers, we can satisfy both goals. For example, simply improving PUE may not result in the best overall efficiency (which is maximum output for a given input), but the previous suggestions do. Many of these decisions simultaneously provide an ROI and support green initiatives. Just as consumers have demanded greener, more efficient vehicles and the industry has begun to respond, so it has begun with data centers.

Re: Server sales impact from of cloud/virtualization?

So, are cloud/virtualization solutions/projects affecting server sales? Well, I’d say you’re absolutely right to bring in the economic argument. While the server market can be challenging this year, the root cause is in the economic downturn rather more than any threat from the uptake of interest in cloud computing or virtualisation solutions. So, I wonder whether this is a question we should be asking ourselves at all?

Leaving the server sales argument to one side, virtualisation and cloud computing could well create a market where ‘apps teams buy servers’ to a market where ‘apps teams buy services’ but simply put, cloud computing and virtualisation are evolutions of data centres and both are business delivery models that require a mix of software, services and hardware – a trio that will always be complimentary and co-exist in any infrastructure, virtual or otherwise.

We at IBM have been focusing our efforts around creating a hardware, software and services stack that brings together the strengths of the web-centric cloud computing model and today’s enterprise data center, providing dynamic allocation of computing resources for a mix of workloads on a massively scalable, secure, heterogeneous and virtualized infrastructure

Re: Talking about AMD’s Opteron processors

I will have to admit that I'm an AMD fan boy, but it does seem that lately they have been getting kicked around by Intel's superior chips more than not.

Re: What does cloud computing mean to you?

I have a set of posts with a short overview to cloud computing at http://www.langabe.org/2009/07/cloud-computing-...

Re: PEER1 to help UK sites with their UK hosting

Web Hosting
http://www.hostingseeq.com/
Web Hosting,Web Host,Web Hosting Services,Website Hosting,Web Site Hosting,Business Web Hosting

Choose the best web hosting service from good companies providing quality web hosting service.

Re: Virtualization is dead, cloud and virtualized data centers are next

A really interesting green computer technology I found is Userful Multiplier. It's where multiple people can use the same computer at the same time each with their own monitor, mouse and keyboard. This saves a lot of electricity and e-waste. A company called Userful recently set a virtualization world record by delivering over 350,000 virtual desktops to schools in Brazil. They have a free 2-user version for home use too.
